Greetings!
Is the economy as much a major topic of conversation in your circles as it is in ours? We see people every week who are struggling with effective approaches to the downturn and looking for actions they can take to make their companies stronger. They want to be ready for the upturn, but wonder what to do.
We give you two new ideas to address this dilemma: Thinking inside the box, and finding "five tool players" for your team. We hope these perspectives provide new ideas for you to put to use in the coming months!
Let us know what you think!!

Roger Smith and Thinking Inside the Box
Most experts prod companies and thier leaders to think outside the box. It seems to be the stock answer to creativity and innovation for these people. Everything will be much better if you just think outside the box.
We believe most companies would be much more successful thinking inside, the box; working on solutions for their customers and developing better ways to deliver value. These investments will pay better and faster returns and put your organization in position to take advantage of the true opportunities as they arise.
This story of Roger Smith illustrates our point. He did an excellent job thinking outside the box for GM, but never fixed what was inside the box to support these new ideas.

The Five Tool Player
Baseball scouts the world over rate baseball prospects on five tools: Hitting for power, hitting for average, speed, arm strength, and fielding ability. Major league stars that shine in all five categories are considered "five tool players."
We believe the current economy forces organizations to have "five tool" change leaders on their teams. Just as baseball teams look for "five tool" prospects, companies should recruit and nurture "five tool change leaders." Learn these tools and how they relate to their baseball equivalents in this short position paper.
